Coverlock Serger Basics: Confident Stitching from the Start

Discover how to get clean, professional finishes with a coverlock serger. This beginner-friendly class walks you through essential setup, operation, and troubleshooting so you can sew with confidence.

What you’ll learn:

  • Machine overview: identify key parts, stitch types (coverstitch, chainstitch), and when to use each.
  • Threading made simple: color-coded paths, needle/looper order, and tips to prevent snags and skipped stitches.
  • Tension and settings: how differential feed, stitch length, and presser foot pressure affect different fabrics.
  • Needles, thread, and tools: choosing the right needle systems and threads for knits, wovens, and activewear.
  • Practical techniques: starting/ending seams, turning corners, hemming knits, attaching elastic and bindings, and topstitching for stretch.
  • Troubleshooting: diagnosing tunneling, waviness, skipped stitches, broken threads, and uneven hems.
  • Care and maintenance: cleaning, oiling points (if applicable), and best practices for longevity.

Who it’s for:

  •  coverlock/serger owners 

What to bring:

  • Your coverlock serger (manual, power cord, foot pedal), standard presser feet, extra needles, 4 cones of thread in contrasting colors, small fabric scissors. A $10 kit fee will be 

Prerequisites:

  • no serger experience required.

Format and length:

  • Hands-on workshop, 2.5–3 hours, small group for individualized help.
